Few buildings in Boston match the Cathedral of the Holy Cross for its role in the city's Catholic life. Designed by the church architect Patrick Keely in the Gothic Revival style, it was built in the 1860s and 1870s on Washington Street in the South End and became the seat of the Boston diocese. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and landmarks around 1900 to 1906, and its catalog number links it to that body of work. The original plate is the source for the image, so the detail of the stonework and the street setting is what to look for.
