The Cathedral of the Holy Cross, shown here in color, was still under construction in the South End's Franklin Square when this lithograph appeared around 1871. Irish-born architect Patrick Keely, one of the most prolific designers of Catholic churches in the Northeast, drew its Gothic Revival plans, and the building later became the seat of the Boston diocese. The print was published by N.M. Williams and issued from the shop of J.H. Bufford, a Boston lithographer known for city views of the period. Its tall pointed forms reflect the mid-century revival of medieval styles.
