The North Battery was a harbor fortification on the waterfront at the northern edge of Boston, placed to guard the approaches to the town from the sea. Colonial Boston depended on its harbor for trade and defense, so batteries like this one were built along the shore and rebuilt as conflicts and threats changed. The battery's position between the wharves and the open water made it a visible landmark of the town's maritime past. This black-and-white view records the site as Boston's waterfront was reshaped by later development, when the old defenses had given way to new streets and piers.
