From the summit of Breeds Hill in Charlestown, this view looks across the water toward Boston, a vantage point with particular resonance because the hill was the site of the battle of June 17, 1775. The etching was published as a plate in *The Massachusetts Magazine*, a monthly issued in Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews in the early 1790s. The designer and engraver, S. Hill, gives the harbor and waterfront a central place, so the print works as both a town portrait and a record of the port's maritime life.
