The print marks the June 17, 1843, dedication of the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, across the Charles River from Boston. The granite obelisk, begun with a cornerstone laid by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1825, honors the 1775 battle fought on the hill during the American Revolution. Published in New York by J. Fisher and N. Currier, the firm that later became Currier & Ives, the hand-colored lithograph shows the monument as a patriotic landmark of the early republic. Its color work and the scene's clear skyline make it a useful record of how the monument was presented to the public.
