The title names Bunker Hill, but most of the fighting on June 17, 1775, took place on neighboring Breed's Hill, on the Charlestown peninsula just across the water from Boston. Colonial militia dug a redoubt there overnight and held it through two assaults before running low on powder and withdrawing. The British garrison in Boston suffered heavy casualties, a costly lesson that the colonists could stand against regular troops. The battle became one of the most storied engagements of the war and remains a point of local pride.
