A French caption identifies this engraved portrait as Israel Putnam, the Connecticut major general whom it credits with overall command at the battle of Bunker's Hill near Boston on June 17, 1775. Putnam, a farmer and veteran of the French and Indian War, became one of the best-known American officers of the early Revolution. The Paris publishers Esnauts and Rapilly issued the sheet from a shop marked "à la Ville de Coutances," part of a wider French appetite in the late 1770s and 1780s for portraits of American commanders. The record dates it only to the 178- decade, so it reflects that enthusiasm rather than a likeness drawn from life.
