The subject is a mural by John Singer Sargent, painted for the Boston Public Library, where a long decorative frieze of the Children of Israel, the Old Testament story of a people on the move, wraps the walls of the interior. This c. 1901 photograph records the painting in its architectural setting, with the curving walls and the figures set into the room. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American cities and landmarks, sold such images as souvenirs and collectors' prints. The card is mounted back to back with a photograph of a Puvis de Chavannes mural, a pairing that reflects how closely the library's painted decorations were studied and reproduced at the time.
