This view shows Pierre Puvis de Chavannes's mural *Muses Welcoming the Genius of Enlightenment*, one of the decorative paintings he produced for the Boston Public Library's Copley Square building. The library, designed by McKim, Mead & White, opened in 1895 and was among the first American public buildings to commission large-scale murals from leading European painters. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this view around 1901 as a cyanotype, a blue-toned process that was popular for architectural and interior records. Its interest lies less in the photographic technique than in what it preserves: a setting where the classical allegory was meant to frame reading and learning as civic virtues.
