Women tending machines that wind and inspect yarn make this print stand out from the many factory views in the collection, because its subject is the work of the hands and eyes at the machine rather than the building itself. The picture dates to about 1912 and was issued by the American Woolen Company, a large textile firm that had its headquarters in Boston and operated mills across New England. Beaming, the process of winding yarn evenly onto a large spool or beam ahead of weaving, and inspection were skilled tasks in the wool trade of that era. The record's "No. 31" suggests it was one of a numbered series of company photographs used to present its operations.
