Printed in brown-olive, red, blue, and black, this Boston lithograph presents the text of the Declaration of Independence as an illustrated piece rather than a plain page. Published by Thayer & Co. around 1861 and designed by R. Thayer, it was lithographed by the Boston firm L. Prang & Co. Louis Prang, a German-born printer, helped establish color lithography as a commercial craft in New England. The print appeared just before the Civil War, when the Declaration's language on equality and self-government carried fresh political weight.
