Printed in brown-olive, red, blue, and black, this lithograph gives the Declaration of Independence a warmth of color that plain black-and-white sheets of the period lacked. Its design is credited to R. Thayer, and the printing came from L. Prang & Co. of Boston, the firm of German-born lithographer Louis Prang, who later became known for colored Christmas cards. Thayer & Co. published the sheet around 1861, the year the Civil War began, when images of the nation's founding were in steady demand.
