Titled "Deacon Jones' one hoss shay," this color chromolithograph takes its premise from Oliver Wendell Holmes's 1858 comic poem "The Deacon's Masterpiece," about a carriage built to last exactly one hundred years that then falls apart all at once. Boston publishers issued the image around 1879, and the Library holds several impressions, with copyright entries under Warner and later under Piplar and White, Piplar & Co. in 1880. Its many stone-printed color layers were typical of chromolithography in the 1870s, a process that made popular comic sheets affordable for homes and shop windows.
