Steamer Penobscot was one of the boats running the coastal route that linked Boston with Bangor and Mount Desert, the island resort that drew summer visitors from the cities. Currier & Ives published this chromolithograph in New York around 1883, and Charles R. Parsons signed the image itself. Steamboat portraits like this were popular household prints, offering a view of the vessels that carried passengers and freight along New England's shoreline before the automobile reshaped summer travel.
