The most distinctive thing about this piece is its subject: a commercial office rather than a street view or building portrait. It advertises the Cunard Line of mail steamers from its 99 State Street office in Boston, the transatlantic shipping company founded in Liverpool in 1840 that carried mail and passengers between Britain and North America. Woodcut advertising like this, printed in black, blue and red, was a common way for steamship agents to attract travelers and freight customers in the late nineteenth century. The record dates it only tentatively to the 1880s, based on an unverified caption card, so the exact year should be treated with some caution.
