The two steamships *Yale* and *Harvard* carried passengers on the Metropolitan Line's sea route to Boston, offering a water alternative to the railroad for travelers between New York and New England. Steamship companies often named their vessels after well-known institutions to suggest comfort and respectability, and these two ships were named for the rival universities. Coastal steamers like these were an important part of Northeast travel in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before rail and automobile travel displaced much of their business.
