Signs above the doors identify this building as the insurance offices of Gilmour Rothery & Company, and the photographer recorded the firm's name in the view itself. The picture is one of the large 8 by 10 inch glass negatives made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes for commercial and travel use before 1920. Boston was a major insurance center at the time, so the scene offers a glimpse of the downtown office district that supported that trade. The record also mentions a name, George B. Brayton, but does not explain his connection to the building.
