Faneuil Hall at the right edge and the Quincy House at the bottom anchor this view of Boston taken from Barrister's Hall, which places the viewer above the rooftops of the city's old commercial core. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative is probably one section of a larger panorama, a format the Detroit Publishing Company used to document American cities in the years around 1900 to 1910. Faneuil Hall, completed in the 1740s and long used as a public market and meeting place, shows how colonial-era landmarks stood among the dense commercial blocks of the early twentieth century.
