Taken from East Boston, this view looks across the harbor toward the city, with piers and wharves crowding the waterfront in the foreground. It is a large-format glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sent photographers across the country around the turn of the twentieth century to document cities, rail lines and scenery. The record suggests a date around 1906, a period when Boston's harbor was a busy center for shipping, ferries and cargo handling. The 8 by 10 inch negative captures fine detail, so the wharf structures and the shoreline can still be studied closely.
