Four coffins, each marked with the name of a man killed in the Boston Massacre, make up this woodcut, which ran in the *Boston Gazette, and Country Journal* on March 12, 1770, one week after the shooting on King Street. The men named are Crispus Attucks, James Caldwell, Samuel Gray, and Samuel Maverick, and a skull and crossbones appears among the coffins as a sign of mourning. Printed alongside the news account, the image turned a street clash into a public memorial and helped shape how colonists understood the incident. Its plain, stark design shows how newspapers used simple woodcuts to rally readers around a single event.
