A printed broadside dated Boston, March 10, 1776, this proclamation was issued in the name of General William Howe and warned residents against aiding the Revolutionary forces. By then the city had been under siege for nearly a year, and Continental troops had fortified Dorchester Heights above the harbor, so the British were preparing to leave. The garrison evacuated Boston on March 17, 1776, sailing for Halifax, which makes this one of the final official notices the royal government issued from the city. Its wording shows the Crown trying to separate loyal townspeople from the rebellion as its position collapsed.
