This color postcard depicts the burning of stamps during the Stamp Act protests in Boston in 1765, when colonists rejected a British tax on printed paper, including newspapers, pamphlets, and legal documents. Crowds gathered at the Liberty Tree and in the streets to show their opposition, and the stamps they burned became a public symbol of resistance. Because the card dates from around 1903, it reflects how later generations pictured this moment as a patriotic episode in the city's revolutionary past. The caption data is unverified, so the scene is best read as an early twentieth-century interpretation rather than a record made at the time.
