Boston's protest against the Stamp Act of 1765 is the subject here, with the public burning of the stamps that the British Parliament had required colonists to buy on printed paper such as newspapers, legal documents, and playing cards. The act drew fierce opposition across the colonies, and Boston's crowds were among the most organized in pressing for its repeal, which came in 1766. This color postcard, dating to about 1903, is a later reproduction rather than a record made at the time, so its colors and details reflect the printing practices of its era as much as the events it depicts.
