This color postcard reproduces an engraving made in 1784, eleven years after the event it depicts rather than a photograph taken at the scene. The subject is the Boston Tea Party of December 16, 1773, when colonists boarded ships in Boston Harbor and dumped tea overboard to protest the British Tea Act; the caption card records three cargoes destroyed. The original design was by Daniel Chodowiecki, a Berlin-based artist working far from Massachusetts, and it was engraved by D. Berger, so the image shows how the event was seen in Europe rather than firsthand. Its c1903 printing also reflects how early twentieth-century publishers kept revolutionary-era scenes in circulation.
