Few episodes of the colonial era were pictured more often than the night in December 1773 when colonists boarded three ships in Boston Harbor and dumped chests of East India Company tea into the water to protest British taxation. Issued by Nathaniel Currier in New York in 1846, this hand-colored lithograph shows the event as a patriotic subject for a mid-century audience that enjoyed Revolutionary-era stories. Currier's firm produced many such prints at prices ordinary households could afford, so the picture reflects both the popularity of American history and the commercial trade in images that surrounded it.
