The print shows the Great Boston Fire of November 9 and 10, 1872, which tore through the city's commercial district in downtown Boston. Fire companies from neighboring towns were called in, but the blaze spread for nearly two days across crowded streets of warehouses and offices before it was brought under control. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that produced inexpensive color lithographs of current events, issued the scene soon after, so the picture reflects how the disaster was presented to the public at the time.
