The lithograph shows the Great Boston Fire of November 9, 1872, as seen from above, with the burned downtown laid out street by street. The fire broke out on Summer Street and spread through the dense commercial district over the next day, destroying more than 700 buildings and much of the city's financial and business core. Bird's-eye views like this one were popular in the 1870s because they let viewers grasp the scale of a disaster at a glance. Printed soon after the event, the sheet records how the city looked at the moment of its loss.
