Boston in 1905 was still a city whose wealth rested on shoes, leather, wool, and the harbor trade that had built it. The Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1897 by joining the city's street and rapid transit lines, carried clerks and factory hands from streetcar suburbs into the downtown offices and workshops every morning. The Tremont Street subway, opened in 1897, was still a novelty that visitors from other cities came to see. Politics turned on the Irish-American parishes and ward clubs of Roxbury, Dorchester, and the South End, where neighborhood loyalties often decided who would sit in city hall.
