This view looks down on Boston from an imagined elevated vantage point to the north, so the whole town spreads out at once, with its streets, wharves, and church steeples packed onto a narrow peninsula. Bird's-eye views like this were a popular way to present American cities in the later nineteenth century, when rapid growth made a street-level view feel incomplete. Printed in color, such views were bought by residents proud of their hometown and by visitors who wanted a keepsake. Look closely at the harbor and the river edges, where the shoreline and filled land show how much the city's footprint changed over its history.
