The fire of November 9 and 10, 1872, is the event this picture records, and the scene shows the downtown district that burned that night and into the next day. The blaze swept through the commercial blocks near the city center and destroyed roughly 65 acres of buildings, with losses that ran into the tens of millions of dollars. Fire companies from neighboring cities came in by rail to help, and the disaster led Boston to tighten building standards and improve its water supply. A wide view like this one shows how much of the old downtown was lost in a single night.
