Few views of Boston Harbor from the water in 1846 include the Bunker Hill Monument so clearly, and the granite obelisk rising above Charlestown marks the spot where the battle of June 17, 1775, was fought. Construction began with a cornerstone laid by Lafayette in 1825, and the monument was finished in 1842 and dedicated the following year, when Daniel Webster delivered the oration. Seen from a steamer crossing the harbor, the shaft shows how the city's skyline and its memory of the Revolution were tied together in the decades before the Civil War.
