Photographed by a Charlestown studio operator named Bryant, whose address is printed on the back, this card shows the granite obelisk on Breed's Hill that commemorates the 1775 battle. The cornerstone was laid in 1825 with Lafayette in attendance, and the shaft was completed in 1842, rising about 221 feet. The card survives in an album compiled by John White Geary, which gathered portraits of Union officers and other figures from the Civil War years, so it likely circulated as a keepsake of the site during that period.
