Few objects drew crowds like the Liberty Bell, and in June 1903 it was brought to Boston and displayed at Bunker Hill, the site of the 1775 battle and the monument that honors it. The bell, cast in Philadelphia and cracked long before the 20th century, had by then become a national symbol of independence, so its appearance in a Boston setting drew public attention. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures that documents daily life and public events in the United States in the early 1900s.
