Drawn in pencil in 1828, this bird's-eye view looks north from the fort at Roxbury across Boston toward Charlestown and Bunker Hill. The State House, designed by Charles Bulfinch and finished in 1798, appears among the city's rooftops and church spires. The view also captures Charlestown in the years when the Bunker Hill Monument was being planned, a memorial to the 1775 battle that the cornerstone laying of 1825 had just set in motion. Panoramic drawings like this one were popular in the 1820s, and they show how the young city's skyline and its surrounding hills related to one another.
