The title names Bunker Hill, but most of the fighting on June 17, 1775, took place on the lower slopes of nearby Breed's Hill, a detail the name tends to obscure. The battle was among the earliest large engagements of the American Revolution, and the British took the position at heavy cost to their own troops. The granite obelisk that stands in Charlestown today was built to honor the fallen. Its cornerstone was laid in 1825 with the Marquis de Lafayette in attendance, and it was dedicated in 1843.
