The Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17, 1775, was the first major engagement of the American Revolutionary War, and this 1909 print by Percy Moran presents it as a scene of dramatic action. Despite the battle's name, the fighting took place mostly on nearby Breed's Hill, where colonial militia dug in overlooking Boston. British forces under General William Howe eventually took the position, but only after suffering heavy casualties in several assaults, a result that shook British confidence in the campaign. Moran, a painter known for his historical subjects, worked in the early twentieth century, when American interest in Revolutionary-era memory was growing.
