This engraving shows Washington on the battlefield at Trenton, a scene that draws on a painting by John Trumbull, the Connecticut-born artist who had served on Washington's staff during the Revolution. The original oil, which hangs at Yale, was made decades after the fighting, so the figures and setting reflect the artist's later memory and purpose as much as the events themselves. The battle took place on December 26, 1776, when Washington's troops crossed the icy Delaware River and surprised the Hessian garrison, a victory that revived American morale after a difficult winter. William Warner's engraving was published in Philadelphia around 1845, when such prints helped spread a heroic image of the general to a wide public.
