George Washington's crossing of the Delaware and the surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey, on December 26, 1776, is the event this engraving commemorates, and its subject is the commander himself at the moment of the battle. The print reproduces a painting by Edward Lamson Henry, which was then owned by Charles J. Peterson, a Philadelphia publisher of popular magazines and histories. The Illman Brothers, a firm known for engraving, translated the painting into a black-and-white image for wide circulation. Around 1870, when this appeared, Americans were revisiting the Revolution through such images, and Trenton, a turning point that revived the flagging cause, was among the most frequently depicted episodes.
