Washington's army crossing the Delaware River on Christmas evening, 1776, is the subject here, shown on the eve of the surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey. Printed by Currier & Ives in New York around 1876, the centennial year, this hand-colored lithograph reflects the popularity of the episode in American memory, which reached its best-known pictorial form in Emanuel Leutze's 1851 painting. The crossing was difficult, with ice floating on the river and a long night of work, and the victory at Trenton the next morning helped revive the Continental cause after a hard winter of retreat.
