This hand-colored lithograph commemorates the day, November 25, 1783, when American troops under George Washington entered New York City as the last British forces withdrew after the Revolutionary War. Washington's return to the city marked the end of seven years of British occupation, which had begun in 1776. Currier & Ives issued the print around 1857, more than seventy years after the event, when such scenes of the nation's founding were popular with American buyers. The print shows the event as a patriotic memory, and it reflects how Americans of the mid-nineteenth century wanted to picture Washington.
