Here the British army lays down its arms before George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, in October 1781, a defeat that effectively ended major fighting in the American Revolution. The surrender followed a siege by combined American and French forces that trapped Lord Cornwallis's army on the peninsula. Cornwallis did not attend the ceremony and sent General Charles O'Hara in his place, and the sword was formally received by Benjamin Lincoln rather than Washington. The print was drawn by John Francis Renault and engraved around 1819 by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. and William Allen, decades after the event it recalls.
