Here Washington and the French general Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau ride together at Mount Vernon, Washington's Virginia estate, in 1781. That summer the two commanders joined forces, and their meeting at Mount Vernon came as they planned the march south that led to the British surrender at Yorktown in October. The image reproduces a drawing by John Ward Dunsmore, an artist who painted many Revolutionary scenes, and it reflects the early twentieth-century interest in presenting the Franco-American alliance as a shared heroic story.
