An engraving of George Washington published in London on September 23, 1785, sets it apart from the many later portraits of him: it was made while the Revolutionary War was still a recent memory and before Washington had become the first president. The print was produced by William Angus, an engraver who worked from existing likenesses, and sold by the publisher J. Fielding of Paternoster Row, a London street known for print and book trade. Its appearance in England during these years reflects strong British curiosity about the American commander, whose rise from colonial officer to national hero was followed closely on both sides of the Atlantic.
