Printed in Paris by the firm Esnauts et Rapilly, this French engraving gives Washington's title as commander in chief of the "Anglo-Amériquaine" army and describes him as named dictator by Congress in February 1777. That phrasing overstates the case. In February 1777, Congress gave Washington broad discretionary authority to raise and reorganize the army during the emergency, but it did not make him a dictator in any formal sense. The publisher's date is bracketed as 178-, so the sheet was likely issued during the 1780s, when French interest in the American war and its leaders was high after the alliance of 1778.
