Asher B. Durand's 1833 engraving reproduces a bust of George Washington rather than a painted portrait. The sculptor, Jean-Antoine Houdon, modeled the head from life during his 1785 visit to Mount Vernon. Durand, who later became a leading painter of the Hudson River School, turned the three-dimensional features into fine line work, creating a flat image that could be printed and sold. Prints like this carried Washington's likeness into homes and schoolrooms in the decades after his death, helping to fix the face many Americans associated with the first president.
