Pictured here is a marble-era portrait of George Washington, dated in the record to about 1841 and photographed by Mark Pellagrini in December 2008. Sculptors of that period often cast Washington in classical dress, with bare shoulders or a toga, to present him as a civic ideal rather than a soldier, and that choice sparked debate over how a republic should honor its leaders. The statue's pale stone and idealized pose are the features most worth noticing.
