A December 2008 photograph by Mark Pellagrini, shared under a Creative Commons license, records this sculpture of George Washington, which the record dates to about 1841. Sculptures of Washington from that period were often idealized, and Horatio Greenough's seated marble Washington, completed in the early 1840s, is a well-known example. Its classical pose and bare torso drew sharp public debate about how a republican leader should be shown. Looking closely at a work like this shows how Americans of the era tried to shape the nation's founder into a heroic, timeless figure.
