Pictured here is a sculpture of George Washington dated to around 1841, though the photograph was taken by Mark Pellagrini in December 2008 and shared on Flickr under a Creative Commons license. The gap between those dates is worth noting: the picture records a work that has stood for well over a century, not a recent commission. Mid-nineteenth-century American sculptors often showed Washington in classical dress or poses, borrowing from Greek and Roman models to present him as a civic hero, so the piece says as much about how the young republic chose to remember its first president as it does about the man himself.
