Unlike the many Washington statues on this board, this picture shows a sculpture of him seated in a classical pose, a style that drew sharp criticism when it was new. The marble work dates to about 1841, when Horatio Greenough completed it after years of carving, and it was first displayed in the U.S. Capitol before being moved to the Smithsonian. Mark Pellagrini made this photograph in December 2008, and it was shared under a Creative Commons license on Flickr.
