The date of c. 1841 points to a sculpture of the first president made in the early republic, when Washington was being cast as a classical hero, often in Roman dress or idealized poses that drew debate among viewers. This picture itself is more recent: Mark Pellagrini took the photograph in December 2008, and it was shared on Flickr under a Creative Commons license. The result is a modern record of an older memorial, showing how the work still stands for the nation's memory of Washington.
